I installed the alsa-oss package to try to solve some sound problems. Now I get no sound from FireFox. Everything else seems to be working fine.

More information:
Alsamixer doesn't show any sliders and the device it shows is my usb microphone, no other. I only have sound out of my left speaker. Gnome volume control does not change volume any more. When I open System/Preferences/Sound in Gnome and test I get a beep through all speakers on each channel.
Everything was was working before installing alsa-oss. I just wanted to be able to accept Skype calls while playing Secondlife.

Trying to follow the Arch Wiki. Here's what I'm ending up with:
Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.
Have a lot of fun!

You want to try an easy experiment? Unplug your USB mic and restart your computer. I've had to do that a few times recently when setting up ALSA for the first time, or reinstalling it. I don't know why it worked, I just know that it has.

What you want is something like what is discussed here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62266
Hope that helps.

Wow, that's an odd one. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks.

Tried that, now I don't have any sound at all.
I'm going to try and remove OSS and try to get back to 'normal'.

I'm not sure how that can be what he wants. Nothing discussed there has worked for me yet.

You're welcome. The funny thing is that it doesn't work for me anymore.
Anyway, go ahead and mark this thread solved if you're done with it.

Yeah, Linux seriously needs a good sound system. Pulse Audio, ESD, Alsa, OSS: they all suck.
