Using Gnome 2.24. Trying to change an icon on the panel. I cannot select any .PNG icon to use. Libpng is installed.
I right-click the app on the Gnome panel, click Properties, click the current icon, click browse, browse to any directory containing .png icons. Directory appears empty.

Not sure if this is the solution, but in the dialog you mention, you only have to select the folder containing png files. Once you do that, you have access to another dialog that lets you browse the actual icons.

Please use a thumbnail linking to the full-size picture.
Also, did you try to click on "Open"? If that doesn't work, try to go in the parent folder, highlight the folder containing the icons you want (apps in your case), and click on "Open". That should work...

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. It just says "Loading Icons" but never displays anything.

Can you see pngs in firefox? I had a similar problem, though zlib/libxml were fubared. Run it from the console to see if there is any output
