How do I make apps look nicer?

Hi,
Just got Xorg and Openbox up and running and downloaded a few Openbox themes.

But the themes only change the Window Boarders right?
What am I missing to get more nicer look "inside" the applications, like buttons in firefox and thunar?

Dont know what to search for on the wiki...

Re: How do I make apps look nicer?

You will have to set another gtk2 theme. A lot of themes are available via http://www.gnome-look.org among other sites.
You can either set your themes manually or use graphical tools like gtk-chtheme or gtk-theme-switch2 to change themes.

[edit] themes should be extracted in ~/.themes

What you're looking for is a GTK-theme changer I suppose.
An app to change GTK themes would be llxappearance. smile

You want GTK themes.  You can get them from gnome-look and there are some in the repos too.  Use lxappearance to set the themes after you've installed them (typically that just involves extracting them to ~/.themes)

ok, installed a few and tried to change them by using lxappearance but that app might only handle the window borders?

Re: How do I make apps look nicer?

No, it changes the GTK themes.  The "window" tab on the left is a list of installed themes in ~/.themes.  It should change the theme inside the window as a preview to the ones you highlight.

Openbox themes control the window borders. Use obconf to set the themes for it.

GTK themes control the buttons and stuff within the borders. Use lxappearance to set those themes.

Re: How do I make apps look nicer?

remember that some themes are made with a special gtk-engine (clearlook- and murrine-engine for example) those themes will work without the special engine but will not look as they are supposed to, especially not the buttons. most engines can be downloaded thru pacman

Gnome-color-chooser is a great app to change the way your panels look (that is in colors) among other elements.

gtk-theme-switch-ex is great. you have to type switch2 to launch it though. doesn't make a lot of sense.

Does gtk-theme-switch-ex also allow you to change mouse cursor themes?  I've been using LXDE's lxappearance for changing my theme but it doesn't seem to chang the cursors.  If not, is there another app for that?

Re: How do I make apps look nicer?

sa I think that's because the original GTK switcher is just switch, switch 2 is for GTK 2 themes

as far as I know you have to set the mouse cursor manually in the .Xdefaults file i.e.
Xcursor.theme: Vanilla-DMZ
