AMD or Intel

Which is better?
Which do you use?

Re: AMD or Intel

There is very simple way to resolve this, just ask Google:

AMD: 15.500.000 results
Intel: 26.700.000 results
IBM: 36.500.000 results
Motorola: 33.100.000 results

Seems IBM is the winner. Yay.

too hot means only that it is burning energy to heat instead of extra cycles ... so it's only a matter of time them to make it more efficient

"This means that our asynchronous optical version would be running at a speed equivalent of 18Ghz while dissipating only about 45 Watts."

and

"optical CPUs could be built that would perform operations about 100,000,000 times faster then today"

WOW - there is a lot to come

... so let's be prepared for the future ;-)

by the way: i'm not buying a computer till there are 64bit - 5ghz available

Re: AMD or Intel

Ooops!  In my haste, I voted Intel.  I meant Motorola.  If I had a second choice, IBM.  A third?  Intel.  A fouth?  AMD....maybe...unless you gave me more options.

I used to develop embedded systems.  There is no finer architecture than Motorola.  EOD.  The Power PC is a mighty fine chip.

For desktops, it would have to be Intel.  AMD is a fine chip, but they lost my patronage long ago.  They used to roll out wafers of silicon crap by the truckloads, while trying to compete with Intel.  They have made great progress since.  I did my undergrad work a long time ago in Computer Engineering, and personally, I think AMD (by recent designs) is what drives Intel chip design today, not the other way around, as in the past.

However, first impressions are lasting impressions.  I had more problems with AMD and their chips.  Compatibility with just about any piece of hardware was a joke.  They made Cyrix look like a superstar.  In reality, it's the Intel chipsets which set them apart.  The recent merger (or partnership, I should say) of AMD with VIA has really helped.  A VIA/Intel chipset combo is like oil and water.  I'll never torture myself like that again.

A 64-bit AMD linux box with 64-bit NVIDIA drivers would be hard to beat.  However, if NVIDIA ever got their act together, I would be crazy not to build a PowerPC Linux box instead.  If you run linux, the PowerPC G5 is the future.  No question.
