Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

I've moved the metapax info here: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/info/metapax

*blows some dust off this thread*

Thanks vkumar. I thought this had gone completely unnoticed.

Didn't comment here before because I haven't used it yet, but I bookmarked this thread for when I put together a new system (in a month or two). I think it will probably come in handy. Nice work.

Re: Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

that's really nice.
i heard gentoo's portage supports this by default (i mean sort your packages in meta-groups for easier re-install).
good to have smth like that for arch.
thanks xyne smile

Re: Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

I've noticed while trying to do a system snapshot (metapax --system-snapshot), metapax would complain about not being able to reconstruct aur packages because it couldn't find /var/lib/pacman/local/abs/files.  I think the files its trying to look for are actually in /var/lib/pacman/local/abs.  Is there a way to specify a different directory for this action?

Re: Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

@edenxavier

The problem was actually that the reconstruction subroutine was looking for "pkg" instead of "pkg-ver". I also found a second bug too, both of which should have been noticed a while ago.

Anyway, the problem should be fixed in the latest version.

This is a good idea, something for pacman contrib?

Thanks ibendiben.

I want to see where my optdepends suggestion goes before this is considered for anything even pseudo-official.

Re: Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

We already have bacman to reconstruct packages in pacman-contrib but the metapkg idea might well be usable.

Re: Metapax: create your own metapackages or reconstruct installed pkgs

I encountered a bug in metapax. Since I do not know perl or regexp, I was unable to fix it.

./metapax --reconstruct autofs
Use of uninitialized value $pkg in concatenation (.) or string at ./metapax line 425, <GEN1> line 556.
Unable to open /var/lib/pacman/local/autofs-4.1.4-4-/files:No such file or directory

Notice the extra hyphen after 4.1.4-4.

I ended up using bacman.

This should be fixed now.
