Confused Setting Up Xorg Resolution

Hello, just finished installing Arch64.

I'm trying to setup Xorg to have the right resolution, I've never setup Xorg from xorg.conf before and I'm confused by the guides.
I would like the resolution to be at least "1680x1050" which is what my monitor native resolution is. If it helps my graphics card is ATI HD4670

Xorg.conf file setup by "hwd -xa"

Re: Confused Setting Up Xorg Resolution

The_Baron,

I'm trying to setup Xorg to have the right resolution, I've never setup Xorg from xorg.conf before and I'm confused by the guides.
I would like the resolution to be at least "1680x1050" which is what my monitor native resolution is. If it helps my graphics card is ATI HD4670

The latest xorg-server does start without a xorg.conf.
Just rename xorg.conf and test. You can then build up a xorg.conf  from there.
Just be sure that you have xf86-input-evdev installed, if not your KB and mouse will not work.

Your xorg.conf is using the driver vesa, and without a xorg.conf it will probably use it also.

I dont think that vesa is able to get a resolution of  1680x1050. For that you will need one of the ati drivers.

Now I have a nvidia, so I can't help you with the ati details, but they are described at:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI

When you have them you will need a minimal xorg.conf.

This one works for me:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
    DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Of course 'Driver "nividia"'will have to be changed.

Re: Confused Setting Up Xorg Resolution

I'm using 1680x1050 native resolution with two dell 2005FPW's. I remember having some trouble until I found a modeline that worked. I'm using nvidia and have a multi independent screen setup. This is my working xorg.conf. , maybe it can help, of course overlooking the parts that don't apply to your setup.
