I ran into this system hang while trying to burn under win98 with Nero 5.5x
Be sure to set your DMA to OFF under - control panel - devices - CDRW
If you leave it on you could get system hangs, even though you may be able to burn small ISO's (under 50megs)
Off to using Peanut and Slackware, no hard feelings but I need my CD to burn, PDA and scanner to connect and arch won't do it.

¿uh?
Since i have windoz, i've always had my CD readers and writers to DMA and Synch Data, and never had a problem, anyway, the problem *might* be that you are using WindowsXP without the SP1 or the necesary update for CD-writing, XP versions without this patch, tend to fail burning or make the buffer go up and down like crazy.
As for other versions of windows, (98, 98SE, Millenium --sucks) they all work OK with the DMA setting enabled, and of course... faster.

just reporting what I found in the Nero support forum, and to help others not lockup and waste CDs. Your mileage may vary.
