Very Low Sound, occured out of nowhere.

Out of nowhere, the sound on my computer will only go to about 1/4 of the actual maximum volume, even when everything is turned up to max in alsamixer, and on my main module.  This occured out of nowhere one day, and i can't seem to find a solution to it anywhere.  Any advice?

I have the same soundcard (or at least the same modules loaded) and I'm getting good volume. 

Things to check:
If you have the pcm and main volume all the way up in alsa mixer that should be it.  You may have to adjust the volume separately if you use esd, arts, pulse, or jack (I don't use them). 

Another thing to test is to make sure your using alsa not oss, and you may want to raise the oss level and see what happens. 

The final thing is you want to check to see which sound device the audio programs are using (usually found in the preferences).

If none of that works, then you're out of luck.  It would help if you post what sound programs you are using and what sound daemons you are using.

So i would think im using alsa not oss.  but how would i go about raising the oss to make sure?  there is no "oss" option in alsamixer.  I have tried just abuot every audio progream there is and even firefox, all of them produce about half of the maximum volume level.

Your daemon line is correct, and the basic setup on your computer is fine.  If it wasn't, the audio wouldn't work at all.  What desktop environment do you use?

About oss, you don't actually have oss installed.  You have the alsa wrapper for oss installed.  This allows programs the use oss to use the alsa driver.  If you use gnome, you can go to the sound icon in the panel and open up volume control and change the device to oss and see the levels.  This will only mater if you have an app that uses oss (like wolfenstein)

What audio programs have you used specifically?  Firefox is not an audio program and has no sound function.  Check the output device in each of those programs and post the results.

I have a similar problem. Yesterday (about an hour after upgrades) the sound seemed to have stopped working. After trying all kinds of possible things (alsaconf, mixers, rebooting [lol], different sound players, headphones, ...) I found out that the sound does in fact work, but is so low that I can only hear it with very loud songs, my best headphones and the sound yanked up all the way. Even then, I can barely hear it.

I use alsa with an Intel 82801G High Definition Audio card  using snd_hda_intel. I tried alsaplayer from the command line, sound players based on arts as well as xine.

My best guess is that the some part of the hardware (amplifier?) is broken. I hope, though, that it is a software issue, after all we just has some multimedia updates coming in.

Any ideas about what I could do?

I still am yet to find a solution to this and you bassically described my exact problem.  Does anyone have any sort of info on this?

If you still have this problem I think I found a solution. Add to /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

That gave better sound volume on my snd-hda-intel in any case.

I was having the same problem, my solution was to unmute all sound bars in alsamixer. The wiki just says to unmute the master and pcm bar, but with just this two unmuted the sound was really low.

I bought a USB sound card. My on-board sound chip was actually fried. FYI, I can recommend the Terratec Aureon Dual USB, great quality for barely any money... but it is available in Europe only.
