[Solved] Nvidia Glx

Hi,

I just installed the latest Nvidia 180.22 and kernel 2.6.28. However I get Xorg errors complaining about the glx module. I've searched eveywhere but I can't seem to find a solution. This is what my xorg and xorg log looks like:

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

I don't know what the fix is yet but I've just done the update to kernel 2.6.28 and nvidia 180.22 and now X will not start.  In my case there are no warnings or errors, Xorg.0.log just stops at:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.

and so does my computer - a hard reset is the only way out.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

Can you be a little more specific. I used to have a similar problem and I used to end up with a flashing cursor from which I could get into a console session. From there I managed to fix the problem.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

I just get a black screen.  I've waited a minute or so but X does not drop back to the console and the keyboard doesn't seem to be working either, so I am not able to swap to another vt.  I've also tried starting X with a minimal xorg.conf containing just a Device section to specify the nvidia driver and exactly the same happens.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

I guess at the moment you need to go back to your previous kernel version. Is there anyway you can get into a console?

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

I didn't find a way to get to a console but I did find the patience to have another go at starting X with the nvidia driver, after compiling nvidia-utils and nvidia locally just to see whether there were any errors in the normal package generation (there were none).

Anyway, in the time it took me to boil the kettle, make a cup of tea and drink it my computer got as far as the gnome startup sound.  I gave up at that point but at least I now have a complete Xorg.0.log to review.  It looks normal except for a whole collection of warnings like this:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 7, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x00004078)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 7, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x00004078)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x0000420c)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x0000420c)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x00007120)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x000025a4, 0x00007120)

I wonder what they signify?  Grrrr

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

@BlueFightingCat: hi, I've had the exact same problem! It was quickly solved installing with the official pkg1.run on the NVIDIA drivers webpage.

As for the problem... I don't know what caused it.. but this works for now.. so...

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

Installing directly from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.22-pkg2.run didn't work for me.  What did work was reverting to the 177.82 driver - using the Arch packages so as not to do any long-term damage tongue - with the kernel 2.6.28 patch.

Re: [Solved] Nvidia Glx

Actually those problems are caused by older drivers. For example in my case I was using official nvidia installer for previous drivers for some reason, and there was a file "/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.177.82" and it was conflicting with /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls...

So, make sure that there are really *NO* files from older drivers. I deleted all this crap and pufff... 180.22 and 2.6.28 works as it should work.

Also it is a lesson why you shouldn't install official nvidia packages. You can use them *or* arch native ones, but not both together.
