Anyone noticed how easily Arch can install RPMs and Debs? The process is basically extract, put the folders in appropriate install paths, write up a .PKGINFO, tar it up, then install the package.
Doing the other two binary formats would be a pain in the butt. ![]()

And it's also the advantage of not too many unnecessary files floating around!

..If you're lucky and the rpms/debs are built against the same version of libraries that are used on your arch system.

Well, when they aren't, I just stuff in what's necessary. I'm still having some trouble getting the Eternity screensaver to work...because I have no idea how to.

Without wanting to sound too dumb, but could you do a little write up on it for those less experienced (read me)?
I checked the wiki but there is nothing in there yet - any info (like a case study) would be dead useful!

I always try to use "universal debs", since many are simply converted packages created for every distro out there, for example crossover:

I use the debs since they're simply converted versions of the provided .run universal binary... and they require no user intervention (well, the .run one does, so...)

Still an ArchLinux lover though.
