I'm running ArchLinux on VirtualBox (XP Host) here. I got everything working fine here on the terminal. When it was time to install Xorg server few problems cropped up.
Luckily I'm documenting everything I do. So I did the following before I got the errors:
. sudo pacman -S xorg mesa
. sudo pacman -S xf86-input-evdev
. Install VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86
. Checked xorg.conf. It does use the "vboxvideo" driver
. Test with xinit/startx
xorg.conf after the VirtualBox Guest Additions installation:

While booting, I also get the message:
:: Loading Keyboard Map: us [FAIL]
On a side note: I didn't get the errors when I performed the Archlinux installation outside of the VirtualMachine i.e. as a dual boot. However in the dual boot case whenever I started xorg with xinit I could just see the black cross in the middle of the screen but the mouse and keyboard didn't function; making it look like it'd hung. Figuring that it was a input config problem I started using VirtualBox to find out the problem. Guess I'm still stuck!
I really can't wait to get started on xmonad/awesome + my fav terminal apps!!

Well, frustrated I installed Arch again and did installed Xorg again without any window manager.
X refuses to recognize my keyboard (PS/2) or my mouse (USB). So it stalls. Can't switch to another
VT. Can't ctrl-alt-backspace. I'm stuck!!!! I just have to cold restart the system everytime this happens.
But its REALLY REALLY weird/frustrating that xorg should be having issues with something so fundamental like
a keyboard and a mouse. One would imagine xorg to do the mundane mandatory yet boring stuff on its _own_
I'd hoped that I'd be able to setup the entire system by friday and get started by saturday. Well, sunday tells
me I've lost a weekend like (change xorg.conf) -> (xinit) -> (reboot and repeat). This sucks!
Anyone had similar issues with inputs being frozen on xinit-ing?
Offline
Solved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well apparently input hotplugging was the feature (annoyance?) to be disabled
Took me over a weekend to find this out. But hey! Its all worth it
Found it in a forum..
http://www.overclock.net/linux-unix/421 … ost5095035
Yay!!!!!!!!
wooooooooo hooooo!!
Later realized I'd seen it somewhere in the Beginner's guide or the Xorg article in ArchWiki too
Actually here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
The suggested solution being:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection
which did the trick
Now that this is past us, I have a question to ask.
How does Ubuntu 8.10 manage to get everything right on booting up? Does it disable the hotplugging?
But the xorg.conf in the live cd was relatively bare and didn't contain that flag. Hmm.. so what/how does it get things right?
Offline
I had the same keyboard/mouse problem after pacman -Syu and disabled hotplugging to resolve it. But there was another problem with keyboard layout...
Then i tried something different
From my xorg.conf
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
# InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
# InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection
Section "Files"
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "Xinerama" "0"
# Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection
#Section "InputDevice"
# generated from default
# Identifier "Mouse0"
# Driver "mouse"
# Option "Protocol" "auto"
# Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
# Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
#EndSection
#Section "InputDevice"
# generated from default
# Identifier "Keyboard0"
# Driver "keyboard"
# Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
# Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
#EndSection
And everything worked fine! Mouse and evdev-managed keyboard and keyboard layouts as defined in KDEmod Control Center. Looks like autodetect and auto config does the job...
HTH and sorry for bad english

Actually, I overlooked the other option:
Adding hal to DAEMONS list in rc.conf. Which actually is easier and makes more sense
considering hotplugging is enabled by default in xorg in the current versions, rather than
going to great lengths to disable it
