GRUB not working...

Arch linux was running fine, I installed win xp on a new partition, it would load into xp only, no grub. So i changed the flag to boot off my /boot partition. I would get error loading operating system, so i deleted the partition and created a new one but I'm having trouble reinstalling grub

Re: GRUB not working...

If you install xp after your arch installation, you have to restore grub:

Re: GRUB not working...

I apologize kludge that you feel my questions are too basic.
I have gone through that already, but for whatever reason, when I reboot my computer it just goes to the grub> console line rather than booting into grub.

It's a good idea to read the wiki before you start messing around, eg removing and creating a new boot partion was not needed.

Re: GRUB not working...

I truly appreciate the response, the only problem is, I've tried this more than once, but then once I reboot, it just reboots to the grub command line. Why is that?

I have the same problem. I use grub since the beginnins and haved installed it many many times, but now when it reboots
on a test laptop it boots to the grub command line.

Other installations like sidux etc on the same laptop boot normally. I am baffled.

If I find the cause I will let you know.

Re: GRUB not working...

Okay, so I'm guessing what I did was unkosher, but it seemed reasonable to me. I backed up my / and my /home partitions to a firewire hdd. I then created the 4 partitions, and installed windows. After that, I went through a new arch install. I then copied all files from my backup to the new drive for the / and /home partitions, making sure the ftab file was correct. I am now getting far, with my current error being:

"Could no load /lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH/modules.dep"
So, I know that the updated hdd was 2.6.28(right, or 27?) and so there's a conflict. Is there a way to fix this, or should I just *sigh* start from scratch?

it happened to me a couple of time, I still don't know why, but I did this to fix it :
on the grub command line, just after booting :

setup (hd0)
reboot

(change (hd0) according to your configuration)
it should load the menu when rebooting
note: if the setup command returns "fail", try to do

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
reboot

(again, change (hd0) and (hd0,0) according to your configuration)
