All filesystems mysteriously lose write (and execute?) privelages

Hey everyone...this evening I had a problem I have never encountered before. I left my laptop on but closed for a couple of hours, and my BIOS turned off my display. Later I opened the laptop and moved the cursor to turn the display back on.

When I tried to start Firefox from my Openbox menu, nothing happened...when I ran it from the terminal it immediately terminated after saying Bus error. Then I tried Midori and got: /usr/bin/midori: Input/Output error. I exited Openbox, then tried startx again.../usr/bin/startx: Input/Output error. I tried reboot: /sbin/reboot: Input/Output error. Same thing with halt.

Baffled, I did a hard shutdown & reboot, and everything is fine now. Why did all of my filesystem spontaneously lose their write (and apparently execute?) privelages?
