Mounting Issues..

I am fairly new to Arch, but overall its my favorite distro I have tried. Ive used slackware, sles9, suse, ubuntu, and fedora, and even tried to install gentoo but that gave me issues. Either way, its an enjoyable distro. Futhermore, I am not a linux guru by any means, but I have messed with it on vmware/virtualbox and in school. Arch has been working fine for me, but the one thing I am having issues with is mounting. When I insert a dvd/cd/floppy, etc, on xfce it will not show the icons. Hal is in my rc.conf file in the DEAMONS array, ive tried it with hal and dbus and dbus w/o hal, and vice versa. I have my user in the proper groups, I have tried to comment out the entries in fstab, but no luck, no icons will appear. If i go to the terminal and do the mount /media/cdrom, it will work (when the entries are in fstab). Theres no automatic mounting at all. I've looked on the forums for a bit, but I havent found anything really to guide me. Any suggestions? I don't mind mounting them through the shell, right now I am using fluxbox, but i do plan to use xfce and i would like to know how to get them to show up on the desktop. Thanks.

Re: Mounting Issues..

I'm not really the right one to comment on this since I much prefer to mount 'by hand'. I prefer the control it gives me and being able to umount when _I_ choose. My one concession is fixed disk(s) defined in /etc/fstab.

This is just to say that ...
a) one doesn't _have_ to use it the windoze ways - not to criticize, but there _are_ other ways
b) by manually mounting, _I_ decide where to mount it (and when)

So sorry - I know I'm of no help to your question ...

Re: Mounting Issues..

Well I dont really mind doing it manually, it doesnt bother me that much. I'd just like to be able to click right on the icon and poof, its up. I guess Windows has spoiled me on things like that. Hhehe. I'm a big fan of both windows and linux, which is probably a weird thing around here..

Anyway, if anybody has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Mounting Issues..

@laneo you speak my mind .. i have gotten everything setup in my arch box .. the only problem i have is automounting.. i have tried every suggestion but it doesnt work. i know that when i plugin a usb storage device the system sees it. (at least fdisk -l) shows it does. might sound crazy but i believe that once installed and properly configured arch can be used by just about everybody. esp for browsing the web, listening to music watching movies, word precessing and general light computer. hence i want to configure one for a non techie friend who uses computers for basic tasks .. he uses a system low on hardware (currently runs xubuntu but its too slow) i cant give him a system that doesnt automount. so i would be watching this thread for responses .. good to see am not alone on this. big_smile

Re: Mounting Issues..

I've seen lots of people with the issue, but usually the solutions I've tried work for them. Right now, I am using fluxbox, which honestly is a very minimalist window manager, atleast for me. My linux box is in my room on a little toy chest and i use the keyboard on my bed. hahah. Very nice huh? I have no speakers so playing cds isnt a factor. I just want to import some files (wallpapers, documents, etc) to my linux box. My arch is dial up, so i dont plan to do anything crazy. I can not get wireless to work. I got it to work twice with ndiswrapper. Sometimes if i check dmesg it will show authenticated but dhcpcd does the little..."err wlan0". and gives me the nonroutable IP (169.254.xx). Dial up is fine for me on this machine though, i wanna use it to get to know linux more, check email, and chat, thats about it. I just want to get this mount issue resolved. Hopefully someone will provide a resolution.

Re: Mounting Issues..

Even on my Virtualbox here at work, i cannot get devices to mount, i still have to go into the terminal and do the mount /media/cdrom. Atleast that works though..heh.
