helvetica and other 100dpi and 75dpi fonts are not working

So yeah, I have xorg installed, have the xorg-fonts-{75,100}dpi installed. I have the /usr/share/fonts/{75,100}dpi in the xorg.conf and they just do not work. They used to work at one time. But they don't anymore. I have no idea why. I have tried everything that seems reasonable to do, but they just will not work.

What means "will not work"? What did you do? Isn't helvetica a type-1 font?

Ah yes, by not work I mean whenever I try to use it in an application, there is great failure. For instance, in abiword, it appears that the letters just type over one another and it is just a disaster. In firefox, when I try to set the font to helvetica, it just flat out doesn't do it. This is also the case for other fonts in these packages, like lucida.
