[SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I am using the gutenprint driver for my printer, also tried cups, none of them seem to want to print. The printer was automatically detected so thats not a problem, but when I print a test page it automatically changes to:

Stopped: job stopped

Is there a module or something I've forgot to include? All I did was:

*Installed cups
*Started cups daemon
*Tried to print -- Failed
*Installed gutenprint
*Setup new printer with gutenprint
*Tried to print -- Failed, same result

Is there something I'm missing? hmm

Thanks in advance. smile

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I have found the error.

When it tries to run gnome-cups-manager, it returns:

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash.

several times.

I have made a group called policykit and added my user to it, then installed policykit but it has made no effect.
Is there something I haven't done that I've forgot to do?

EDIT:

Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed

This is what gnome-cups-manager shows in the properties of the printer.

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

a epson cx series?

Let's see. First of all, try to uninstall your printer. Afterwards, check you've installed cups, gutenprint and ghostscript. Finally, *restart* the printer spooler.
You can always check cups' status at http://localhost:631

And about chmoding 666... most time this isn't necesary, as long as the printer gets correctly detected by the spooler.

They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I've installed Arch Linux twice on this machine, I don't think that's the issue. I think the issue is due to the long error message I posted above.

Here is some more info, cups:631 reported:

Stylus-CX3200---CUPS+Gutenprint-v5.2.3 "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"
    Description: Stylus-CX3200---CUPS+Gutenprint-v5.2.3
Location:
Printer Driver: Epson Stylus CX3200 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.3
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20CX3200

Why would pstoraster fail? hmm

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I would do what kjon suggested(and i recently had to remove/readd my epson stylus dx6000 so maybe that is related..)..

*set debuglevel to debug in cups.conf
*have something like $ tail -F -n 100 /var/log/cups/error_log
running in a terminal
*restart cups ( $ /etc/rc.d/cupsd restart)
*then go into localhost:631, remove printer & all jobs if they don't get removed automatically and add it again. then print a testpage from that interface and see if it works and/or if you get any errormsgs from the log

I'm certain this is some kind of permission error or the above error.
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash.

This is the one I mean, I cannot for any kind of solution for it on Google that works.
Any ideas? Print test page doesn't work after doing this.

More relevant info:

Using the gnome manager, first time I go into the list, I see the printer as ready, when i want to print a test page, it loads the ghostscript, then returns Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed

I think that's the most important error of them all.
But what do I know? o_o

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

kjon ~ $ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster is owned by ghostscript 8.63-4

it looks like a ghostscript issue.

Did you delete your old printer and reinstalled it again?
Check permissions of your usblp%d devices, if any.

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I would if it would let me.

http://localhost:631/printers/

-->

Delete Printer

-->

Error:

The printer or class was not found.

I also can't do it from gnome-cups-manager because of this:

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I would recommend to reinstall cups. But, delete it with

Pacman -Rsscn cups

Then, reinstall it as usual (cups+ghostscript+gutenprint).

I hope this works... neutral

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed

Same old error.

There must be something I've done wrong...

Could it have something to do with my hosts.deny file?

  GNU nano 2.0.9 File: /etc/hosts.deny

#
# /etc/hosts.deny
#

ALL: ALL: DENY

# End of file

It was like this by default.

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I don't know then. I manage everything from localhost:631, since I'm a xfce user. I don't know if you're using a fronend or you're _directly_ speaking to cups (using its web interface). Unfortunately, all my pstoraster issues were related to a wrong ghostscript installation. I really don't know what's wrong with your system. I'm sorry.

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

Thanks a lot for your help. smile

I'm sure someone will have encountered this problem before.
For future reference, I used both gnome-cups-manager (frontend) and localhost:631 both with the same results.

wait a moment!
I saw your /etc/host.deny. Don't you have a entry

cupsd: ALL

on your /etc/hosts.allow?

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I've identified this to be a permission problem, or some sort of bug maybe?

I can print perfectly from any application, but I can't print a test page from the cups page.
Pstoraster simply fails.

Also, when trying to gain admin rights to access the app, I get this:

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash.

This must be what is giving me these errors!

Re: [SOLVED]Epson CX3200 + cups + gutenprint

I renamed everything gnome related, no result.
I made a new user and put it in groups:

users
lp
storage
optical
wheel

Same old error.

It's not only this program that gives me the error, others do it as well.
What on earth is ORBiT?

EDIT: This thread will continue in the "Desktop Environments" section. This thread is no longer relevant to my problem as I can now print, but not within GNOME.

Thanks everyone!
