Attempt to suspend gives a "dbus" error

I've carefully followed all the steps in the wiki, installed pm-utils and uswsusp, and edited all the appropriate files.  But when I (as root) issue the command "pm-suspend", I get:

error: libhal_ctx_set_dbus_connection: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

Does anybody know what's going on here, and how I can fix it?  (I'm using a Thinkpad T42).

Thanks,
-A.
