Can't switch away from VT8, all input devices completely useless

This problem has me quite befuddled.
I can switch freely between VTs 1 through 7 (7 being my X), but as soon as I hit ctrl+alt+F8 all input devices go dead (not even the numlock LED cares what I do) and I can't switch back.
The only way I've found to get back is to ssh into my machine and "startx -- :1", which gives me a second X where inputs work again.

The fact that doing "startx -- :1 -screen MySecondMonitor" gives me an X session on my second monitor, but now all input devices are bloody useless all the same just serves to drive me completely batty.
