Athene Desktop

Hi everyone, I've seen very interesting desktop that seems to be pretty good{attractive to the eye as thesaurus says lol } Just the short part of its feature summary:
Optimised for Intel Pentium and compatible processors.
Uses SNAP graphics technology from SciTech Software instead of X11.
Graphics throughput is 17% faster than Microsoft Windows and at least 25% faster than X11.
Backwards compatible with all Linux X11 applications.
Linux Kernel 2.6.7
Fast booting - as quick as 4 seconds etc. Because I'm just newbie :?  I'm not feeling yet to build a package for it  . Is there someone who would do it and post it to the packages please? Thank you.

Re: Athene Desktop

just download it from Ibiblio, unpack and execute... i dont think it suits the Arch packaging since its not sourceware (its only binary) and its not GPL.

You can package practically anything in Arch -- look at Java, Opera, Flash...

I was interested in the product until you mentioned its only available in binary though. :-D

Re: Athene Desktop

it's very fast, locates all my programs and has several DE s to choose from.  Permissions is really the only tricky part to getting it to run.  Anyone want to try it out?

Re: Athene Desktop

I've installed it before and the user permissions was quite tough for me to solve. As well as booting into it. Did you make arch package for it or do you have any hints how to change it that the user would have rights to start it . Is it really so fast?

Same here. Also I couldn't get 1024x768 with 85 Hz refresh rate to work (might be incompatibilities with my monitor, though---but XOrg works). Athene gave me 1024x768 with 60 Hz, which strains my eye and on my possibly not-so-good monitor I can even see strobes.

Re: Athene Desktop

Nice gui.. but.. optimzed for Intel?   Intel was the best but not now.. AMD has sailed past the giant  roll

A thought.. is X11 slower than windows? according to that test it is!? well... I think my comp (amd duron 1800, 512mb ram) is many times faster with linux than windows.. and more stable ofcourse, but that's obvious.. hehe.. instead of windows patchwork.. lol

Re: Athene Desktop

i think the xfree/xorg are slower than their windows equivalents, but the window-managers (xfce, icewm, etc) are faster. maybe the linux strength - ie, modularity - is a bit responsible for this lag...  8)
