Making a relay turn on and off via Linux?

I have an old Motorola 3-channel hi-fi that uses tubes.  I would love to get it set up with MPD, and I have a server ready for it.  I want to have it completely ready to play on-demand at all times, but I don't want this thing to be on all the time, subtracting from its life, heating up the room, and taking all that power!  So my solution, if there is one, is to have the computer trigger a relay that turns the hi-fi on and off.  I might sync it to mpd somehow in the future, but ... baby steps!  I have a lot of soldering experience and am semi-handy with bash scripting.  Where should I start with this project?

Run it off your parallel port (if you still have one)?

I believe there are some USB devices that do exactly what you want. I don't know if they're compatible with linux, though.

There are some rs232/usb/ethernet controlled power outlets.
