Whenever I try do anything with pacman, I get the error quoted in the title. This was after accidentally deleting /var in the process of mounting a partition there. I'm fearful that I've deleted something vital; namely, pacman's internal record of what's installed. I just wanted to double check before I have to re-install (again...) and make sure that there's no way to recover.
Thanks for any help.

All the pacman databases are in var. Dont have any backups?

You have deleted pacmans record of everything that was installed. You could try and identify what you have installed from the files on your system and using "pacman -Sf package" but a reinstall is probably easier...

Or you have your database in an irregular place and you need to define that place in pacman.conf

Sorry to butt in - is there no way of regenerating a database? Or at least dumping in a standard that can be built up over time?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like the easiest and cleanest way to do it is just to reinstall so that it won't come back to bite me. Cheers.
