Whenever I'm using Xfce I notice my fans are on full blast, and it gets really annoying really fast.
Update: I was just using LXDE and it still has the fan problem. Maybe there's just something wrong with my laptop?
Right now I'm installing LXDE and I'm going to see if I get the same problem with that.
Any suggestions?

Are all of your case fans running mad, or just your videocard's fan? My videocard's fan ran full blast until I installed the appropriate proprietary drivers.

I'm not sure. All I know is the fans sound very loud, even though my laptop isn't getting as hot as it has been (with Windows Vista if I ever do boot that up).
Hmm.. I'll just try restarting and hopefully something will clear up. I've noticed this before, though, which is why I posted here. I was wondering if a change in DE or WM could affect fan noise because it gets really annoying on my laptop and I was thinking of jumping ship on Xfce anyway.

I'm pretty sure your choice of DE has nothing to do with how your fans are running. That stuff is handled by the kernel.

Alright well maybe it's just because I haven't used this computer in a while, because I just booted Windows and now it's a bit louder.
I guess I'll just have to get used to it
Thanks for your help

I'm getting the vary same thing on my laptop, but only lately.
have the ATI catalyst drivers for my card, but the fan still starts up at full speed, runs for ~3 seconds then stops for ~3 seconds. It is indeed very annoying.
[edit] It may have started when I started using compositing with XMonad.
