Keytouch unable to grab special keys

Hey guys,

I'm using a Sun Type 7 keyboard, and in XFCE I have found that the best way to get the special function keys (volume up/down, mute, etc) to work is to use keytouch.  Keytouch worked perfectly for me the first few times I used it.  Several reboots later, it simply fails to work.  I've tried everything from switching the keyboard model in keytouch to reinstalling the program, but nothing so far has helped. Running keytouch manually from a terminal generates the following errors:

keycode 115 to scancode 458 (0x1ca)
keytouch-init: Failed to set keycode:
keycode 114 to scancode 458 (0x1ca)

According to xev, the volume keys are being mapped to their appropriate XF86Audio* bindings, however, this seems to be interfering with keytouch.  If that is the problem, how would I go about unmapping these keys so that keytouch can use them?  Or is there something else I may have inadvertently messed up here?  Thanks
