I I setting up an lxde desktop and wanted to install lxmusic, which needed xmms2. Fair enough, I thought. Then when I went to install xxms2 it wanted to pull in the boost lobrary which is no less than 111MB in size once installed. Is it just me or is this a ridiculously huge requirement for what is supposedly a *lightweight* music player? Installing lxde as a whole (I had a few basic dependencies that kde4 pulled covered) amounted to 16MB, and getting the music player for that environment requires 120MB.
What gives?

Why not use a different media player, or XMMS 1? Sonata or gmpc would probably fit in quite well, as would consonance.

Boost is an absolutely massive library of C++ functions that is used by many open source applications.
If a 100MB dep is a big problem (after all, it is a legitimate dependency, not like some apps who need massive piles of Gnome/KDE), I would go without LXDE and just use a WM and your own tools...
But what SamC said. Just don't use lxmusic.

xmms2-git in AUR doesn't have boost listed as a dependency. I don't know whether or not this is an oversight. You can try one of those.

Boost is listed under makedepends in that.
I know there are plenty of good light alternatives. I was just genuinely puzzled at the choice of dependencies for an app for what is meant to be the lighest desktop environment, which would presumably go on a lot of computers where that kind of disc space makes a difference. by way of contrast, 'pacman -S xfce4 exaile' requires only 93MB of disk space to install on this install.
And also, a tiny part of me was hoping someone would say 'oh, you can compile it without it as well like this...'.

From the looks of the INSTALL file included with xmms2, boost is only required for C++ bindings. I have no idea which clients that will render useless.

Huh, If it is such trouble to have boost libraries, I'll have to strip my game from boost dependencies... ![]()
Some applications are WYSIWYG, and some are WYSIWTF.
