My audio device is the following (output from lspci)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
working using the snd_hda_intel module and integrated in a Lenovo T500, if that's any help.
The built-in microphone works, but if I connect an external microphone then I get no sound input from any of the microphones. I suspect that plugging in the external microphone disconnects the internal microphone, however the applications (or alsa in general?) still try to record from the internal one. Is there a way to select from which microphone I want to record? The audio mixers (alsa mixer, gnome-mixer, etc.) show volume sliders for internal and external microphones. I have both at maximum volume (and unmuted).

Man! The microphone I used was broken. I just tried with another one and everything works.
