Strange microphone problem

Hello everybody,

since approx. 3 hours, I own a headset with usual connectors (for mic-in, no USB stuff). Listening to stuff works, but the microphone behaves strange. It seems to recognize slow air movement only. You can hear that from the boxes if you tap on the mic or blow air on it but it doesn't react on usual sound at all.
I don't think it has something to do with the drivers, but maybe someone experienced the problem before?

thx joeda

Re: Strange microphone problem

Have you tried to check the mic / capture volume control, mic boost and recording source? One of those controls might have changed for some reason.

Re: Strange microphone problem

Hello

volume is set in amixer, boost is 100% so I can hear what the mic does and source is alright.. I don't think that's the problem. Thx for reply.

Re: Strange microphone problem

I'm having a problem identical to this, which started when I updated my software this morning, including the latest version of the Linux kernel.

[zauber@myhost ~]$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3870 Audio device

If there's any other commands jeoda or I should post the output of, please let us know.

Re: Strange microphone problem

It's an HDA Intel sound controller here, too.

And I tested 2 brand new headsets, both show the same behavior hmm

Just read reply to Falcatas topic about this problem and I can say that the proposed solution (turning down mic volume) works!

Thx a lot, linuxinit!

Re: Strange microphone problem

Reducing volume does not work.

Are you using ALSA? It might be it, maybe a problem with the module for your soundcard.

Re: Strange microphone problem

Yeah, I'm using Alsa.  However, the problem has changed: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63774
