PDF for the Arch Wiki?

Hello, I would like to suggest the arch wiki would have a pdf version so that users with no present connection can just read the pdf if they are up to something...Would it be nice?  I know that the wiki is constantly updated but we can release updated versions monthly or weekly of the pdf containing the latest updates...:)

This has been suggested previously. Please search the forums for what others have said about it.

This is one of the threads:

Re: PDF for the Arch Wiki?

There is the readme in the install images .... I guess people should be made more aware of that I guess, as it is your best friend when installing arch if you don't have an internet connection.

Re: PDF for the Arch Wiki?

"To create an XML dump, use the command-line tool dumpBackup.php, located in the maintenance directory of your MediaWiki installation. Run the command as php dumpBackup.php without any arguments to display a brief description of the syntax. You need to specify whether you want a full dump of the complete history of every page, or just the current contents of each page."

Why doesn't someone just do this, tar it up, and then upload it to the repos every so often?  I guess it's possible to archive the whole wiki but I'd be skeptical over how many people that don't have an internet connection to just browse it directly, would even have access to the kind of bandwidth needed to download it.

Re: PDF for the Arch Wiki?

Any body can wget the whole wiki recursively(excluding the external pages/user pages, talk etc) and tar it up and upload it on some file sharing site.
Wont that be much better than having this discussion over and over?

The wiki, like most Arch things, is a community effort. If you, and possibly others, would like to take on the task of converting the wiki to pdf, and keeping the pdfs in sync as the wiki changes, please go ahead. If others are interested, maybe they will post here. The arch dev team contributes to the wiki like everyone else, but we certainly wouldn't have the time to do this alongside our existing work.

There are many who wish their ideas to get implemented but few who are working .......

I would like to have the wiki in pdf, i am going to try to make a pdf version, but u_no_hu you also could try something yourself? The community is there for you and you are there for the community, you also could help with bugtracing, bug fixing, community projects (yaourt), working on the wiki, every program that is use and isn't in the Wiki i'll try to add a wiki about it

Re: PDF for the Arch Wiki?

Maybe this would help: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Pdf_Export

I know it would help me since I'm normally printing into an PDF but this would simplify it and I think many would appreciate it.

Re: PDF for the Arch Wiki?

There is a firefox extension to make a pdf of a page but the links are directed to a website so you can't  "browse" through the wiki with pdf's.  Also there's is a CLI tool htmldoc

Produce PDF or Postscript from HTML documents including TOCs and Indices

Why a PDF? Why not just compressed HTML?
