stv680 cheap webcam works with xawtv but does not work with skype

has anyone been able to get the cheap stv680 webcams to work in skype?
with xawtv I get a pic with following msg

[venky@myhost ~]$ xawtv -c /dev/video0
This is xawtv-3.95, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.28-ARCH)

v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway

with skype i get the following when i test the cam and skype crashes

I have tried the  LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
but there also skype crashes with same msg has anyone had same issues?
