i installed kde 3.5.10 and all was excellent
i then installed kde 4.X in parallel and it broke some kde 3 apps
i figured out the cause - for some reason kde 3 apps use the config files and profiles etc from /usr/. . . . - which belong to kde 4. it ignores his own files in /opt/kde / . .
how can i set up kde 3 to look in his own files and not mess up with kde 4 ?

How ? Re-partition your drive and install KDE 3.10 on one partition,
KDE 4 on the other. A whole heap of woes will befall you if you try
to mix them.

nope. i want to use apps from both together in each of them - just like with kde and gnome

why dont you just call your apps with complete path?

Which repository for kde3 did you use?
Do you have PATH set properly?

I believe KDEmod has ironed out having both KDEmod3 and KDEmod4 on the same machine... and it would be much better for your purposes, installing some KDE 3 apps.

my purpose is using each desktop fully and in addition have apps from the other desktop. not just some kde 3 apps on kde 4
i dont like kdemod
is PATH related ? it does find the executables. its just that they look into the wrong folder for configs
how do i change this default ?

You're probably screwed, then.

The only thing I can think of would be a space-eating chroot for the KDE you use less.
Why don't you like KDEmod? It's just modular KDE, only a few small patches. You can install all of KDEmod if you want and get the (99%) exact same thing as KDE normal. KDEmod is just loved often because it lets you save space by removing apps you don't need.
