Hauppauge

I asked about tv card configuration some time ago, never got it working. Now the friend I got it from said that it's probably broken because lightning struck his computer when it was in that one! So anyway, I need to buy a new one. What tv-cards will work great with both arch and windows? I'm thinking of getting the "Hauppauge WinTV GO2 PCI Nicam Stereo", will that be good enough? Most imprtantly, will it work under linux?

Re: Hauppauge

it depends on what you want to do.  The hauppauge cards work great - check out the ivtv (IvyTV) drivers for details.  If you want to save your CPU and do hardware encoding on the card, I'd suggest a hauppauge pvr250... if you want TV out on the card, I'd say get the pvr350 (but supposedly a normal video card TV out is much better - i.e. the TV out on the pvr350 will not be initialized until the module is loaded, so you will not get the initial boot kernel spam on your tv)

Re: Hauppauge

Yeah, hardware encoding would be great, but I don't have that much money and I need to get the tv card working soon. I have a p4 2.4 ghz, will that do to watch tv and still do other stuff? and what about recording? Can I record say two other channels while watching one? Is that limitation on the card or the cpu? (or both?)

Re: Hauppauge

each tv card will provide one video source - if you want to record 3 channels at once, you need 3 cards.

as for watching tv and doing other things, the hauppauge will do that well as it is hardware encoded.  without hardware encoding, you're going to be using around 20-30% cpu for the video feed alone.

as for price, the pvr250 is usually around $100-$150.
the cheaper ones do not have hardware encoding (non-hardware encoded can be as low as $40)

Re: Hauppauge

Isn't there away round that now? Since I read about the card I was thinking about, that it could preview up to 16 channels. Wouldn't I need 16 cards to do that in that case?

And it's one of those $40 I can afford unfortunely...

Re: Hauppauge

hmm, well you can do software encoding, but keep in mind that you wont be able to.... say compile mozilla while watching tv... browsing the internet, sure

post some links about the cards you're looking at.

and you may be right that viewing is different - I know, thought, that recording to disk requires one card per stream
