Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

Well, I've been having a lot of sound issues since I reinstalled Arch (in retrospect, the reinstall was probably wasn't necesary).  Since then, I've been having audio issues with Skype.  I now have the issues with Skype corrected.  However, audio has stopped working in Second Life.  What do I do?

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

Okay, I've narrowed down the problem.  Apparently, my computer cannot handle sound for more than one application at a time.  And now, trying to run SecondLife steals the audio from Skype.

Does anybody have a solution to this?

This is normal:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/All … nd_at_once

And this page would help too:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Skype

EDIT: Got beaten to it, nearly word-for-word tongue Doing too much at once, took a while to respond.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

I pulled this from my /var/log/errors.log file:

Jan 27 10:08:17 myhost pulseaudio[2771]: module-hal-detect.c: Unable to contact DBUS system bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
Jan 27 10:08:17 myhost pulseaudio[2771]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-hal-detect" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
Jan 27 10:08:17 myhost pulseaudio[2771]: main.c: Module load failed.
Jan 27 10:08:17 myhost pulseaudio[2771]: main.c: Failed to initialize daemon.
Jan 27 10:08:17 myhost pulseaudio[2770]: main.c: Daemon startup failed.

EDIT: I ran /etc/rc.d/pulseaudio start as root, and when I did I noticed that it was trying to start up HAL, which was taking forever.  So, I suspect that there is a problem with HAL.  I'll try reinstalling it to see if that helps any.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

Did you try to use

$ aoss skype

to start Skype?

OSS is "teh evil", try to use ALSA where possible and the `aoss' wrapper for apps which use OSS.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

Okay, I'm at a loss now.  I've got PulseAudio up and running now, so theoretically there should be no problem.  But I'm still getting audio in only one app at a time.  And I get zero audio in pidgin.

No effect.  Last I checked, Skype doesn't use OSS anymore.

Wintervenom, did you even read any of the posts in this thread?  Problems with pulseaudio were mentioned several times.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

When I had a similar problem a few years ago on a debian box, I followed the instructions in the alsa wiki page linked below:

http://alsa.opensrc.org/AlsaSharing

There may be something in it that wasn't in the wiki pages linked earlier in this thread. Good luck.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

I tried the solution in that page, der_joachim.  The instructions weren't entirely clear, and using the .asoundrc modifications indicated in it made the issues worse, so I had to reverse the changes.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

for no sound in pidgin, the solution is in the wiki!

just set the method to command and use the following command;

aplay %s

2007 - Started using Arch Linux as my only/main OS
- Samsung Series 3, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz - 8Gb DDR3 ram - 700Gb HDD
On board intel Graphics & Sound

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

Okay, I've narrowed the problem down a bit.  It is SecondLife specifically that is causing the problems.  Any time it is running, all other apps don't have sound.  So, I'm going to look into this a bit.

Re: Sound Issues (Only one app has sound at a time)

like i'm pretty sure it says here:http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Allow_multiple_programs_to_play_sound_at_once, all apps using mmap in oss steal the sound interface. you have some options to consider, and their all in that page. if it's really important to you to get sound also when using secondlife, you basically have to get yourself another soundcard. that's just how much alsa suck(still better than any oss..). now read that page for what kinda cheap soundcards you can get yourself. i think most would do(then just use one of the cards for mmap apps and one for all the alsa apps) just be sure it fits into your mb tongue
