im fixing now minor issues. when i go to appearances > fonts and click subpixel smoothing nothing happens, i got same as result as best shapes. maybe i need to install additonals fonts? thank you

install ttf-bitstream-vera and/or ttf-dejavu if you didn't already. that solved the subpixel font issue with kde4 for me ...

i think i should say that everyting was fine, but when i reinstalled gnome ive noticed that problem
EDIT: ive just found that subpixel smoothing works in terminal, but not in anywhere else

Same thing here... i have smooth fonts in all WMs (openbox, awesome, fluxbox) using my ~/.fonts.conf and also in KDE.
But in gnome fonts are plain blurry and ugly.
Tried all possible settings in Appearance/Fonts dialog. Nothing gives me a clear result.
He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

i have reinstalled arch linux from scratch and i still see same problem, monochrome and best shapes has the difference, but subpixel smoothing fonts are same as best shapes. maybe i need to install some additionals fonts to make subpixel smoothing work, but in kde4 subpixel smoothing works fine
