Howdy,
I just installed KDE 4.2 from the Extra-Repo (x86_64).Everything works fine so far, expect Dolphin!
In "Details"-View (my default), Dolphin abbreviates the name of files and folders after 1-7 chars.
Some examples:
Music -> M...
Uni -> ...
Documents -> Docum...
The shorter the original file name is, the less chars Dolphin displays, before it starts to abbreviate with "...".
This only occurs in Details-Mode. Columns / Icons are fine.
I played around in the Options for View Modes and noticed something even more strange:
I pick the default System Font, I get the behavior described above.
I pick a custom font (let's say Charter) and I increase the font size, more characters are displayed correctly. Inverse effect by decreasing the fontsize.
I've made two screenshots to illustrate the problem
Systemfont
Custom Font, fontsize 14
I deleted the following files / folders to get new and clean settings, unfortunately this didn't work
~/.kde4/share/config/dolphinrc
~/.kde4/share/apps/dolphin
Filesystembrowser from other KDE-Apps (Kate, Ktorrent, etc.) do not have this problem.
Can anyone reproduce this behavior?
Neither google nor KDE-bugtracker came up with anything like this.
Any ideas?
Best Regards

[EDIT]
I came, I thought, I'm stumped
Very strange... is there a '.font.config' file in your home directory ?

deej, thanks for your time and good will, to help me
Actually I found the problem: an old version of the bespin theme.
I created a second user and reproduced step by step the settings on my mainaccount. As soon, I changed the theme to this ancient version of bespin, dolphin started to maltreat file/folder names. I am not sure, why this is fixed with an newer version or whatever exactly caused this problem.
Anyways, fixed now.
Thanks and best regards!
