Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

Well, the problem could be also with the Xorg version from Arch (im not using ubuntu much anymore, and no intrepid, so i cant say if there is a subversion difference). Good thing is that it seems to be WM independant - so one source of failure less.
But if its Xorg or Catalyst cant be said atm. I tried two catalyst drivers (8.11 and 8.12), problems are the same. The old Xorg was working well with 8.9 - which ran fine with the patch from phoronix. But it wont run with Xorg 7.4 sad
Maybe someone has the chance to test Xorg 7.3 with an actual catalyst to see if it is the driver? But i would say its the combination of Xorg 7.4 and catalyst.

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

Come to think of it I've been doing a bit of distro hopping lately and I ran Slackware for a little while (now I'm back with good old Arch though). I'm not 100 % sure but I think the 8.11 version of Catalyst worked well with Xorg 7.3.

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

anyone seen this problem anywhere else? it doesnt seem t fix from a catalyst upgrade nor xserver one, and im sure there are other distros using xserver 1.5.* and catalyst 8.12 or 8.11, im starting to suspect that one of the pkgbuilds is just somehow broken, possibly catalyst or catalyst-utils, could the building process of the kernel module be wrong?
did anyone try to use the raw ati installer for the drivers?

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

Yes, i do - because the arch catalyst package sadly isnt working for me at all. Still using the catalyst-utils package, because i cant remove it due to dependency problems.
Ive also a thread open at phoronix.com (actually i overtook a thread looking like my problem wink ), there seem to be some ppl having the problem. Some could avoid it using the nopat kernel option. But its not working for me too...

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

There has been an update to the Catalyst driver, within a few days of the one that caused lots of trouble, in combination with the xserver upgrade.

The updated Catalyst driver improved the lag I have changing workspaces if there is a Terminal window open in at least one of them.

I think it is still slower than it was before these two Catalyst & the xserver upgrade.

I expect that one or maybe two more Catalyst bug fix upgrades should make the problems history.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.

I'm on Xfce these days, I should have mentioned that. :-)

Found this thread on phoronix: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthre … #post58525
Sadly no answer on my question...well, so lets see what 9.1 will bring. The beta also didnt solve the problem.

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

catalyst+xfce = slow window resize if compositing is enabled. No matter the settings in xorg, I tried every one from internets

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

Is the problem with slow desktop switching only in Arch or also in another distributions?

Re: Desktop switch and Window resize slow Xorg7.4/w composite and openbox

The problem is from upstream.  Due to Arch being more cutting edge than most other distro's it can experience some of these problems long before other distro's have an upgrade scheduled.   By the time Ubuntu has an upgrade the problem will usually be sorted.

Today I installed Openbox, I'm still using my xfce-panel & Terminal.  I noticed quite a speed increase, more than I would have prior to this X.org / Catalyst / Xfce bug, I think.

I still notice that the slowest thing on my machine is Xfce's Terminal; resizing the Terminal window by dragging the lower right corner is a very ugly experience, using the shrink/expand gadget in the top right of the title bar takes about 3 seconds each way, add another Tab is slow too; or when I move around in my 6 desktops with different app's / tools open on them, they are instantaneous except for the one with Terminal in it which takes 2 -> 3 seconds?  Still, it is much better than it was in Xfce, so I'm pretty happy, I may not even bother replacing it.

Openbox with xfce-panel is just like Xfce for me, except faster. :-)

This bodes well for the those using the Catalyst drivers:

[Edit:]  I just installed Sakura, & found it to be a fast, light & a tabbed terminal application.  It is not at all affected by the bug that slows Terminal down.  So it has solved the Terminal speed problem, for me at least.
