that would be roots default wallpaper. Log into a gnome desktop session as root and change the background to whatever you like in the usual way, either by right clicking the desktop and select 'Change Desktop Background' or through System > Preferences > Appearance.

why would you want to run nautilus as root??

It's really a drag to do it that way, because then nautilus will just keep drawing the desktop with root privileges.
You should disable nautilus desktop and wallpaper drawing for root by running gconf-editor as root and disabling all that.
You also might want to look at midnight commander for your root file manager

Try
gksu nautilus --no-desktop
That will give you nautilus as root without the root desktop.

I want to do that just in case I have to do a gksu nautilus (for root file transfers, etc.), and so I don't want the desktop to become that horrid green. Luckily, those days are getting few and bar between
