X only starts once...

Recently installed the latest kernel (2.28.2-1) via pacman -Su.

When the machine boots it enters run level 5 and everything is fine, X works, etc.
(I'm using gdm + openbox)

If I have to log out for some reason, the login screen never comes back.
Apparently it gives up trying after 3 attempts:  I see the following
error in the logs:

AUDIT: Thu Jan 29 09:41:18 2009: 3241 Xorg: client 5 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=100 pid=3262 )
AUDIT: Thu Jan 29 09:41:18 2009: 3241 Xorg: client 5 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=100 pid=3263 )
AUDIT: Thu Jan 29 09:41:18 2009: 3241 Xorg: client 5 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=100 pid=3264 )

Does anyone know what is going on, or how to fix it?
