Re: Arch on Eee PC

After i upgraded to kernel eee 2.6.28.5 i no longer have processor scaling and /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold seems to have gone away.
Downgraded to 2.6.28.2 and everything works fine.

Have something changed with the new kernel or am i beeing dense?

NOTE:
The p4-clockmod driver is no longer included in this kernel because it
provides no power usage benefits and introduces unacceptable latency
up_threshold tweaking in /etc/rc.local is no longer necessary

This is the post-install message of the toofishes' kernel.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Thanks , so cpu scaling is dumped?

Gonna try a batterytest with the new kernel and see if i loose any time because of this.

Thanks again!

Re: Arch on Eee PC

When I try to compile the ralink 2860 drivers I get

make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.28eee/build'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'.  Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/lib/modules/2.6.28eee/build'
make: *** [LINUX] Error 2

No idea why. I did modify the PKGBUILD like it said to. What am I missing?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

I'm getting an X signal 11 regularly on my eeepc. I'm using the latest intel drivers, xorg-server, synaptics driver etc. The xorg.conf is what was posted by toofishes, as well as the fdi.

I've tried the newest intel drivers, no change. The backtrace points to /usr/bin/X, and is in different routines.

Anyone else having issues similar?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Regarding dropping p4-clockmod, it was, indeed the right decision. I have a 701 which was scaling, and even though I had the up_threshold at 20%, it was still lagging a lot. It rendered the 701 unusable at times, so I eventually dropped the CPU scaling.

First thing I noticed, the laptop became cooler; battery time was also better, and it actually made sense. P4-clockmod's scaling is too aggressive, as it sets the CPU speed too low. At such low speeds the CPU load is higher before the up_threshold defines the upscaling.

Also, it has been proven that p4-clockmod's scaling isn't effective, not only because it brings that awful lag, but because even at the lowest speed, without load, it's not saving power, at all.

I hadn't used my 701 much, because I had been primarily using my Advent 4211c (MSI Wind clone) as a portable... But I'm now stuck with the 701 'cos the Advent's HDD and touchpad went berserk, and it' sent to warranty.

First thing I noticed, especially with toofishes' latest kernel, the fan is almost never on, and the lappy's quite cooler than with scaling.

Two thumbs up on that decision.

Exactly what I was seeing, so thanks for confirming.

Remember, the chip still supports the different C-states, which is where the real power saving benefits are.

Toofishes The new url for the kernel git is http://code.toofishes.net/cgit/dan/eee.git, or did I find an old or invalid one?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Hi. I try to install arch on my eeepc701 following guide in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?tit … ntable=yes.
I drop the xorg.conf content exactly as in the guide, but when I tried X (X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf) there's a fatal error said no screen. Then I tried copy the xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and without looking at the content, I tried X. The display change to X, with x cursor in the middle, but my eeepc doesn't respond to the mouse or keyboard, so I can't press ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt-del to get back to the CLI. It's freezing now. What should I do? Please help.

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Hi,

Got Arch up and running nicely on my eee900 but (there was always gonna be a but), my wifi occasionally loses its association with the access point, so I have to re-run iwconfig to get everything back up and connected again (also have to kill dhcpcd and restart that as well).  Using toofishes kernel, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?  Just connecting to a simple WEP access point.

Thanks,

I don't know if you're using just a console or a gui but if you are using a gui, wicd will manage your wireless connections and re-establish if they lose association. Also, slightly off topic but would using WPA be a good idea? tongue

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Hey Guys,

I'm using arch for a while now and I'm quite amazed.
But my entusiasm went away with an update of my eee.
After some researching with google I found out that the stock-kernel (2.6.28.7) support's now many eee features.
But I'm little bit confused. What is this rfkill thingy and how can I use it. Before I used the eeepcmodules-hal from aur and acpi-eeepc-generic. But now everthing is gone. Then Fn-2 Button wont turn off my wifi but never back on and stuff like this.
Could someone give an advise howto get hotkey's working again?

Regards,

nIcE tongue

Re: Arch on Eee PC

same problem here :
fn+f2 display only "wireless lan on" never  "wireless lan off" and do nothing with wifi
fn+f1 does nothing to suspend the cpu
is it a problem of asusosd ? need to recompile it?
else the new kernel of toolfish is definitly better in speed (it was laggy before with p4clock)

have you an applet for cpu use and battery ?
i need wine, is it possible to use it without recompile the kernel

The script executed on this action refers to files that don't exist: /proc/acpi/asus/wlan and /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/wlan
If somebody knows why...

Re: Arch on Eee PC

/proc/acpi/asus/wlan is depracated. It was provided by eeepc-acpi.
Its replacement is eeepc-laptop (since 2.6.27 I think), which provides the /sys interface.

The non existance of the proc interface is fine: its depracated and you should not use it. But the sys interface should be there. Is the eeepc-laptop module loaded (or included in-kernel)?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

Thanks for the answer big_gie.
Indeed, there is such module in arch's regular kernel, but it is not in the kernel from toofishes. But since this kernel has a majority of features enabled in built-in, it does not necessarly means that it is not included. I still have a /sys/devices/platform/eeepc directory, containing stuff like camera and cardr, but no wlan.

What do you think?

Re: Arch on Eee PC

There is a clue here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 91#p514291
The file /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state is able to control the blue led of wireless activity, so I guess it's controlling the powering up/down of the wireless device too.

------------------
edit: I'm not able to wake up the device after having echoed 0 to the file.
ath5k phy0: failed to wakeup the MAC chip

This is a known kernel bug, but I don't find the workaround. It has been fixed in fedora with 2.6.28 but my kernel is 2.6.28.7eee and still not working. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=451181

Re: Arch on Eee PC

i just installed archlinux on my eeepc 701 surf and after reading this thread combined with the wiki i am a little bit confused.

i use toofishes kernel and all my issues are wifi related.

At first i am also one of those whose alt+F2 is not functional and furthermore in this installation(i also had archlinux before) wifi is not functional at all.

I use wicd for controling my connections and set wifi interface as wlan0.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening?

edit:

another problem with wireless is, though i choose from bios that wifi is disabled on boot, it gets enabled during booting arch.
