Either use a real IRC client or read this.

The pidgin account creation dialog, I assume. You may want to google for "Introduction to IRC" as well, since you don't seem to have some of the basic concepts down.

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

I've got a bit farther. I can see the chat, but I can't register.

I type
REGISTER <mypasswd> <myemail@sympatico.ca>

and it says the email is not valid.

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

I would suggest getting a real IRC client (maybe XChat), Pidgin is not designed to do IRC.

Then check http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html to get a first thought.

I don't deny it, but it isn't really designed to do so. It is more designed to use with IM networks like jabber, MSN, ... Direct converstation to one-on-one. Maybe that's my vision on it, but really, Pidgin lacks in many IRC functions.

I agree with Duo. Start Xchat, enter user data, click freenode, go to archlinux. It should all take under a minute.

...and then, once you realize how awesome IRC is, get away from Pidgin (for god's sakes, at least use Carrier tongue) and switch to bitlbee wink

I'll try other clients later.
But I want to get it to not reject my email first.

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

You dont actually need to register initially, you just need to choose a nick to use that isnt already taken.
First, connect to freenode, then type /nick <newnickname>, then /join #archlinux.
Personally, I have never used pidgin for irc, and like everyone else, I would recommend you start with the GUI client, XChat.
I now use weechat in a terminal for IRC.

Have you actually joined a network yet?

/connect irc.freenode.net

I enter that into the nickserv and it says "Unknown command"

I did enter irc.freenode.net when I created the account. Is there somewhere else I'm supposed to type it?

I do that, and I can see the chat but when I try to talk it says
(10:51:28 AM) Please register with services and use the IDENTIFY command (/msg nickserv help) to speak in this channel

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

Let's start over. I don't know about Pidgin's IRC capabilities, but typically with IRC clients you connect to a server on the freenode network (`/connect irc.freenode.org'), then you change your nick to something unique (`/nick example007'), and then you can protect it with nickserv (`/query nickserv' and then type `help register' in the nickserv chat window for instructions). Once you've registered a nick with nickserv, you can connect to freenode with that nick and type `identify <password>' to log in.

By the way, I second Ranguvar's suggestion of bitlbee for all your IM needs. It lets you create a local IRC server that maps IM accounts of various protocols to IRC channels. I use irssi as my IRC client.

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

Pidgin does not have a /connect command.  You have to configure all that stuff in the Account settings.  You may have to install the purple-plugin-pack and enable the IRC-related plug-ins for access to extra settings if you need them.

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

I configure pidgin to connect to irc.freenode.net, and that my nick is Raccoon1400
I connect
nickserv says Raccoon1400 is not a registered nickname
I type /nick Raccoon1400 and nothing happens
I type identify <password> and it says Raccoon1400 is not a registed nickname (not sure if I'm supposed to include the <>, but same results either way)

Re: How can I get onto the arch IRC chat with pidgin?[SOLVED]

No no no. the `/nick' command is just to change your nickname. You said you're already Raccoon1400 so there's no reason to use `/nick'. Since nickserv informed you that the nick isn't registered with a password, you have nothing to identify with. You don't have to do anything with nickserv. You can just join #archlinux and chat. If you want to register the nick to prevent others from using it, use nickserv to register the nick. `/query nickserv' should open a window in which you can chat with the bot nickserv. Type `help register' to learn the proper syntax of the `register' command, which you'll type to nickserv to password-protect your account. Then in the future when you log on to freenode, you'll have to `/msg nickserv identify <password>' or `/query nickserv identify <password>' or `/query nickserv' and then in that new window `identify <password>', etc.

I remember the good old days of ircII and BitchX, no messin' around with IM clients to get on IRC...
