Hello,
I do not like OpenOffice very much. It seems overly large and buggy. For my word processing needs, I've found abiword to be perfect. I still need something for slideshows and spreadsheets though, and they should be able to open the microsoft formats too.
Any recommendations?

For spreadsheets, I use gnumeric. It is available in extra, install it with
sudo pacman -Sy gnumeric
[ lamy + pilot ] [ arch64 | wmii ] [ ati + amd ]

Thanks gnumeric looks great.
I also took a look at impressive. I haven't installed it yet but it looks more like it for presenting the slideshows than producing them. I may be wrong though so I'll install it tomorrow and find out.

The point is that you can produce the slideshows in anything that can make pdfs, like LaTeX or inkscape.

I've done away with Office Suites, word processors and the likes. My replacements software:
Word (word processor) -> LaTeX
Spreadsheet -> gnuplot & sage/python
Presentation -> none (I find them highly ineffective)
If I do have to make a presentation, the only thing I would ever use a computer for would be to display certain graphics like pictures and maybe charts.
