KDE4 Painfully slow..

I have an intel 865G integrated graphics card..and kde4 is so painfully slow for me, even without affects.  I saw in another thread that it may be the graphics driver causing the problem.

Do you guys know if it is indeed the intel driver? Or perhaps my computer? I have 512mb of ram..which I think would be enough. I have a Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz as well..and everything is just so slow for me. In windows, unfortunately, it isn't.

I also notice my harddrive light comes on randomly when everything slows..and simply things completely slow it down..from minimising a window to opening the kde menu. It's just so odd..

Hopefully someone can help.

Thanks smile

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

I think your hardware is more than enough for KDE4. You may want to check out your xorg.conf.

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

That is exactly the same problem I described in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64063. I can't say if the intel driver is causing this but maybe you should check what happens if you use the vesa driver instead. If the performance increases the intel is probably messed up as well.

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

I can definitely confirm that it's the intel driver. I switched to the vesa driver and everything opens instantly..no lag at all. However..my resolution is horrible. It's like 800x600 or something on a 17" monitor. How can I change this? I tried changing it in the xorg.conf..but no luck. Even when i put 1280x1024 as the only option, it still goes to 800x600 sad

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

Have you set HorizSync and VertRefresh in your xorg.conf? In my configuration these values were missing at first. This caused the vesa driver to default to some very low refresh rates which only allows a resolution like 800x600. Specifing them let me also choose 1400x1050.

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

Hi, thanks for your response. I did enter my horizsyn and vertical..not sure why I can't seem to change it.

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

Does your xorg log say anything? When I had this problem there were many errors about refresh rates.

Re: KDE4 Painfully slow..

Ok this is incredibly crazy, but i think i fixed my problem with the intel driver. I did some googling, and checked my bios..

I found an option called (basically) "video frame buffer". It was set to 1mb. I raised it to 8mb..and reloaded arch.  I fixed my xorg.conf, and renabled the intel driver and im on kde4 now, everything seems fast and fine. It's really weird..

I'm not sure if this is your issue, and I'm not incredibly knowledgable when it comes to tweaking the bios, but I think this worked for me.
