xorg.conf looks fine, this is my first time using arch and i'm finding many of its aspects very compelling but although i've been knocking many issues down i just can't think why i can't get graphics above 1024, to my native resolution of 1280*1024.
i'm running on a dell inspiron 1501, and although ubuntu works flawlessly with it i have noticed that some other distros compatability is somewhat lacklustre...
any ideas about what i should try?

Might be a good idea to show your xorg.conf in the forum for us to have a look.

yes of course
let me say that i think this was generated by that app described in the installation guide / beginners guide, and i added the 1280 x 1024 to the "screen" section...

Your xorg.conf uses vesa, so its unclear what video-card you use.

I'm not good with Radeon cards; but did you install the Radeon drivers?

Can you please provide more information? graphic card, any xorg.log that would give errors?

i installed the propriatry radeon drivers (catalyst / fglrx) the graphics card is an Xpress1150 which is basicallly a cut down X300

Have you tried removing all that modeline and Horizsync/Vertrefresh stuff?
X should be able to figure all these values out itself.
If that doesn't work... Are you sure your Horizsync/Vertrefresh is correct?

well i've tried everything to get arch up and running on my system but unfortunately i'm going to have to back off for now, need a nice stable familiar system for uni,
Although with my brief experience with arch i will definately be trying it again, either in a few months possibly with a new X release or on a new laptop i intend to buy soon... thanks for the help guys...
