Had to rebuild Arch because I failed to allow enough disk for mount point '/'. Used the current download of 0.7.
(Have kept the system updated for last 6 months)
Initial 'pacman -Sy kdebase kdelibs' reported xorg conflict with xfree86. Then did 'pacman -Sy xorg' and kdebase kdelibs updated without error messages.
Then 'pacman -Sy kde' apparently executed without errors.
Now startkde dumps at the point of initializing peripherals.
Here's the screen after the abort---
ts (if that means what it sounds like! it's appropriate)
KSMServer: Aborting
startkde: Shutting down
Warning: leaving MCOP Dispatcher and still 12 object references alive
-Arts: SampleStorage
-Arts: etc.......... thru MidiManager
warning: leaving MCOP dispatcher and still 113 types alive
klauncer: Exiting on signal 1
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 1966, errno = 0
startkde: Running shutdown scripts
startkde: Done
waiting for X server to shut down
$
Will appreciate your help in deciphering this.

Well, here's a followup.
Used Knoppix to post the original message.
Then rebooted Arch.
Now kde loads as it should. Arts still missing some stuff, but at least I am running.
Thanks for looking.
