Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO HELPED ESPECIALLY M177ER
EDIT: NEW PROBLEM ON POST #9, a bunch of errors

I've run the X -config *path to xorg.conf* command and there is just a black screen with a black X for the mouse cursor, I can move around the mouse or ctrl+alt+f1 to get back to the shell and kill X but that's about it. Here's the errors I get from X

(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!

I get the same thing when I try startx except it shuts down the x server automatically.
I made the xorg.conf file with the built in program, here is the file.

type1 and record can be commented out IIRC. Not sure about the TTF error.

I get the same thing when I try startx except it shuts down the x server automatically

Do you have a DE/WM installed? Did you set up .xinitrc?

I made the xorg.conf file with the built in program, here is the file.

The input devices can be removed if you are using hotplugging.

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

I did some extra research and it looks like TTF and Type1 are fonts. So which packages should I download to get fonts that Xorg will accept? I've commented out anything to do with these two modules and yet Xorg still insists on trying to load them.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … tall_Fonts

pacman -Ss font
or
pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-dejavu ttf-bitstream-vera

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

A new strange turn in events has occured. I got Xorg with lxde to work! Then, for some reason I clicked on one of the icons in the lxpanel and it started flashing. I restarted X restarted the OS and restarted the computer yet the flashing persisted. I then decided to uninstall lxpanel and reinstall it. Now I'm back where I started and X isn't running again. sad
EDIT: When I look in the logs it shows no errors, I'm just getting a black screen.

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

First of all did you do this?

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

How are you starting X? If it is 'startx' do have

exec startlxde

as the only uncommented line in ~/.xinitrc?

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

What was the icon for?

How did you remove the panel with pacman?

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

I know the xorg.conf file works correctly, I have used it before to start up X and lxde without any problems.
My ~/.xinitrc files all have exec startlxde in them with nothing else.
I first reinstalled lxpanel

pacman -S lxpanel

Then I tried removing it

pacman -R lxpanel

and reinstalling it

pacman -S lxpanel

By the way, thanks so much for the help you are giving me and directing my efforts into solving this problem. I'm new to Arch and really appriciate the help.

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

not sure if this helps, but when u uninstalled lxpanel, u might need to remove the configs!

ive started to use pacman -Rsn to fully uninstall before re-installing apps! it clears all config files for the app, and any unused dependencies!

Re: Xorg black screen on startup [SOLVED]

I reinstalled xorg and I am now getting these errors. I think they have something to do with permissions but I'm a nub so what do I know?

Parse error on line 272 of section Screen in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
"EndSection" is not a valid keyword in this section.

The /usr/lib stuff is over my head but on line 272 of your X11/xorg.conf you have a syntax error. Try fixing that first.
