Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

Is there a reason that you are waiting? I installed on my new lappy last night with this image and had no problems. I even installed on ext4/RAID/LVM. You just have to use the ext4dev tools and then update the system on first boot, change the ext4dev refs to ext4 and reboot. Works great here.

No I am not waiting for any particular reason other then to use the new iso. I have installed and migrated to ext4 already once on my laptop about 2 or 3 weeks ago. For some strange reason I wanted to try osx86 on my laptop and I deleted my arch install which lasted about 20 min and now I just want to reinstall arch. I can just use the current iso and migrate again, but I just wanted to try the new iso if it is available soon. I have only been waiting for a few days.

It should be coming out soon (as in days).  They are on the 4th beta, as I understand it.  I think the devs are just waiting to get some bugs cleared.

We basically have no more known important bugs. we have to rebuild new iso's with all the fixes and patches, test for a while and release.

You guys hijack the archboot thread for official isos wink
archboot release will probably come february or march, depends on how much time i'll find in testing and fixing bugs.

Is there a reason that testing happens 'off the forum?'
Normally all test versions were posted here so much more people notice and test...

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

BTW isolinux now supports making so called hybrid iso's. These ISO files can be burned to CD and also dd-ed to a USB stick and will boot from either.

That's a good way to consolidate the image building for Arch.

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

To be more clear:
archboot =! official install iso
- Official Iso is on 4th beta, based on archiso
- archboot is only developed by me and i started hacking some nice stuff(simple raid, lvm and encrypt support),
which needs some time and testing until new archboot iso/img will be released, i cannot promise a exact date.

Can you explain a bit how you implemented it?
In AIF (arch next installer) I implemented lvm/encrypt support (not yet raid though).  The installer offers a "menu-like" interface where you have an overview of all your block devices (be them real ones, or provided by device_mapper), you can choose them, and build on top of that "normal" fs'es, lvm, dm_crypt volumes etc. all in 1 interface. when the definition part is over, everything is processed and executed.
(see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=58110 for more info/some screenies)

How did you implement it?

Also, it seems to me like there isn't much communication between the official/archiso and the archboot project, or is this just me?
It seems like you have made some useful things, why are they in a separate project and not integrated in the official one?
Is there a fundamental reason we should keep 2 different projects? why not combine our efforts?

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

Just a quick question, since I'm about to receive my new hardware soon to install as a server with RAID5, and I have never ever used RAID before.

Is this guide: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … AID_or_LVM still up to date (it does mention v0.7...) and will it work with archboot and/or archinstall?

Zl.

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

Both will give you the mdadm and lvm tools.
If you use hardware raid then you don't need mdadm at all.

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

That *was* quick! I'll be using mdadm until I can get the dineros for a decent RAID-controller.

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

you need to assemble everything on command line,
Setting mountpoints and package install should work normally
grub will probably fail to install correctly, be sure to read how to install grub on commandline.

Re: 2008.12 archboot test iso/img files

I fould out that there is way to have make a iso to boot from usb device with dd or cat.

http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.ph … _DISK_MODE

This will make sure the iso only has to be download once. Saves on disk space and bandwidth. This is good news for users and developer.

Thanks goes to jensp who got it from a comment on his blog.
