I tried to do this twice, once via pacman, and once via shaman
The KDE desktop disappears... fine, so I ctrl-alt-bkspace and go to log in and all of my plasmoids are just dark boxes, I have no panel or menu. Since I have an image of the install, I just reimaged my drive back to where I had it before the upgrade.
Is there a better way to handle the upgrade other than
pacman -Syu
?
And is the funtion and appearance of 4.2 drastically different from 4.1? I keep looking at different screen shots and such, and it looks the same so I am soliciting advice from those who have upgraded and see an advantage.

KDE4.1 configs might not be compatible with the 4.2 version, so if your configs are important do a backup first and then remove the .kde -stuff and upgrade.
Also all the plasmoids are not compatible either..

When the desktop loads, I get the wallpaper, , the login sound chimes, but I get no panel, etc. If I hit alt X it get a "run" dialogue, but nothing runs.
I installed fluxbox from the command line and it runs fine, and any command I launch with xterm.
I think my upgrade was minorly "botched"
I started shaman and I found a a few kde 4.1 packages remaining, so I removed them, I also saw that some packages had been removed during the upgrade, but not replaced with the new ones, so I requested the reinstall of those. I logged out and logged in, and...
I answered my own question: it was worth it. It looks pretty slick:-)
