kde3.x compatibility

Is kde3.x compatible with the current x-server and am i supposed to have any difficulty in using them ?

Yes, I belive it is. However as there is no kde3 packages in the repos and maybe there are packages that are being compiled against kde4 that may cause you some troubles. I doubt it's worth the effort. Try kde 4.2, it's more stable and polished (compared do previous kde4 builds).

There are no KDE-specific problems with the current X stuff. However, some X drivers are in quite bad shape at the moment due to a whole lot of transition in X components. IIRC, you won't be able to do acceptable compositing with intel 8xx chipsets. In general, direct rendering is slower on intel boards than it was with the previous set of xorg-server (1.4.x) + intel drivers.
