ati drivers no longer work after upgrade

I was trying to mount a vfat partition the other day, to copy files from a friends USB drive. It would not mount no matter what I did. I had found out that for some reason, the last kernel that I updated to did not have the proper character set enabled in it before it was compiled. I noticed there was a new kernel, and decided what the heck, and gave it the old pacman -Syu

I rebooted after this only to find my x server now crashes. So I did some research and it seems that there is a lot of complaints about this new xorg 1.5. So I thought about downgrading, but decided against it. I did a hwd -x, and copied over the xorg.conf.vesa, and restarted X. It worked. I then tried with the ati driver and it doesnt work.

So I am using x, with the vesa driver. And I can view videos (these were the files I wanted to copy from my friends USB drive. Although I can now mount it, and have copied them fine.)

Here is some output

[shawn@lungbox ~]$ lspci | grep -i vga

[shawn@lungbox ~]$ pacman -Q xf86-video-ati

BTW, when the xserver fails, I select yes to see the output, and it skips the output and tells me to re-enable x when I have configured it properly. So I cant seem to get you that information.

Side note: I can also not upgrade gnome-terminal. I get this error:

I am not impressed by the update problems I have been having recently. I've been using arch for a while now, and everything has gone smooth exept for the last 2 months, I have had about 5 seperate issues. Not sure if im the only one feeling this. Might be my set up who knows.

about gnome-terminal: do the conflicting files belong to another package? Submit a bug report about that.

[shawn@lungbox ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.ati

Shouldn't this be xorg.conf without .ati?

Yes, you need to rename xorg.conf.ati to xorg.conf.  It will not be recognized with the .ati extension.

Everything else in the xorg.conf looks sane, though I don't use the 'ati' driver so I can't say for sure.  As mentioned, please post the output of the Xorg log file.

Re: ati drivers no longer work after upgrade

The xorg.conf.ati was renamed to xorg.conf. I had named it back when it didnt work. And renamed xorg.conf.vesa to xorg.conf to have a usable x session.

Here is my output for Xorg.0.log

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I have tried to remove the xorg.conf and retry the x server. It opens but I have no keyboard or mouse control and the resolution is incredibly small (640.480?). I can not log in, or change to any tty because of a lack of keyboard, and I am stuck rebooting my computer, which results in a fsck and all that good stuff.

As for the gnome-terminal problem, I managed t get around it by removing the package, updating my system, and reinstalling gnome-terminal. I wanted to try that since there were new ATI drivers waiting to be installed. But the new ATI drivers do not seem to do me justice. :S

And sorry for not getting back right away. I was just using the VESA drivers to get me by. I had a lot of work to do before the holidays. And now im back on it.

Re: ati drivers no longer work after upgrade

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same situ, (mobile radeon 9600)although downgraded to old xorg and catalyst as the vesa video was too poor. Continuously googling for solution but no joy.

Re: ati drivers no longer work after upgrade

catalyst doesn't support many cards anymore.

look for supported devices, mobility radeon 9600 is for sure not happy with catalyst since a month or two, and isn't in the supported device anymore.

your solution's name is xf86-video-ati
