Alright, I've tried hp-toolbox. It discovered the printer properly, but could not locate the right ppd, despite it being on the list of available ppd's. Manually loading the ppd in hp-toolbox did not work.
Tried the web interface for cups. Discovered the device properly, loaded the appropriate ppd... test page aborts.
hmmm.... ok.... I went to manage printer->cancel all jobs, then back to manage printer-> stop printer , then start printer again, and on a whim hit test page.... it printed. WOOHOO!!!
All it took was the battery in my laptop dieing to make me reboot, a strange error with x that made it suspend to ram, twice, then this... geesh.
Ok, now that my issue was solved while I was typing this out, I might as well share with y'all. If anyone needs to get CUPS working right... add cups to rc.conf, then use the old windows trick: reboot.
Now I can get my homework done.
I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...
huh? oooh... shiny!
