I hope I posted this in the right section.
Gnome-Do used to allow themes without compositing and it ran great, but when I upgraded to 0.8 it suddenly stopped working properly without compositing.
It wouldn't let me choose a theme and now it doesn't find any applications at all.
What is going on? Does this means I won't be able to use it properly without compositing?

I think you won't be able to theme GNOME-Do the way you want it without compositing. My suitemate found that unless Compiz Fusion started before GNOME-Do did, he couldn't change themes as the list was ghosted. He was using a laptop with Intel 945 integrated graphics if that helps.

If you're using Gnome, you can use the marginally less resource intensive metacity compositor. It uses your CPU instead of your graphics card, so anyone can use it. Then you can theme away, and have drop shadows, and real transparency! If you're using an ATI graphics card, though, make sure you only watch video in X11 output, otherwise your videos will not be happy.
