lockup with startx

Hi,

I've been having this problem for about a week now, that when X starts, my screen switches off completely (power saving mode)
and the computer doesn't respond to anything anymore. The only way out is to do a cold reboot.

Since then I have done a fresh install (downloaded at ftp://ftp.belnet.be/packages/archlinux/ … -i686.iso). After setting it up, I ran an update of the system with "pacman -Syu", and then I installed X and hwd with "pacman -S xorg hwd". I used "hwd -x" to create a xorg.conf-file (I used xorg.conf.vesa, since I read somewhere that this should always work).
Anyway, here it is:

I would also post /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but there is a problem with that: the first time I did startx after the new install, a logfile was written. I then made some changes to xorg.conf and tried startx again. Before that, however, I deleted /var/log/Xorg.0.log, since I wanted to be absolutely sure that the logfile I would find there would be the new one. After crashing my computer with startx and rebooting: no logfile. I don't know if this is related to the lockup problem.

Also worthy of note. The problem is probably not caused by the xorg-server. Among the many things I tried this week before I did the fresh install was downgrading it and the problem was still there. Also, I think the latest xorg-server package has been installed for some time while X worked just fine. I remember because I also struggled with the input hotplugging thing a while ago.

I really hope somebody has some clue what's causing this problem

Re: lockup with startx

Huh.

Do you have a dual-head ATI card? If you don't, ignore this message. tongue

If you do, queue up your "startx" or "xinit" command, unplug your screen from the first head and plug it into the second, then hit enter. Does X work? If it does, your ATI card is one of the models that has some kind of (non-damaging) fault in the firmware or something that means the head outputs are messed up and A is B and B is A. There's an option to fix this in I think the fglrx config file.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Re: lockup with startx

Well, I can only see one output I can plug my screen-cable in, so I guess I have a plain old single-head videocard.

By the way, rereading and rethinking my original post, I saw I have been mixing things up a little bit (I tried so many things). The problem I described is what I had when I tried with the xf86-video-ati driver. With vesa the screen actually does not shut down, but still locks up and sometimes shows these green belts across the screen. Sorry for the confusion.

Also, after I briefly gave up on arch, I installed ubuntu (intrepid ibis), opensuse 11.1 and debian etch. In all of these X started up without any problems, so IMO it's doubtful that the problem is hardware-related.

Re: lockup with startx

pacman -Sy hwd
hwd -u
hwd -xa

... and only then, start X
The above make some sort of usable xorg.conf and disable evdev- which is the main reason for hard lockups when X is started.
You can finetune xorg.conf later.

Re: lockup with startx

Ok, I tried to do that. Sort of.

When I did exactly what you say, the system did not lock up, but just gave me a short error message that the "fglrx" driver did not exist. This seems logical to me because you need the 'catalyst'-package for that, if I'm not mistaken.

So I tried again the xorg.conf.vesa-file generated by hwd -x: lockup, screen goes black with some green dots and stripes here and there.

For good measure I also installed 'xf86-video-ati' and replaced 'fglrx' by 'ati' in the "xorg.conf.fglrx"-file and tried that one. Same problem as before: screen goes into power saving mode.

Re: lockup with startx

Perhaps this problem is related to another problem I'm having. Whenever a lot of text scrolls through the screen (let's say when compiling a kernel), the computer tends to freeze as well.
I noticed this when I was compiling kernel 2.6.27.10 in order to downgrade. The only way the compile would not freeze the computer was by quickly switching to another terminal with Alt-F2 when the compiling started.

Anyway, in the end my X seems to work fine with the older kernel. Guess I'll have to put 'kernel26' in my ignorepkg-list. I'm still not too happy about this, though. Does this mean I can never update my kernel again? Does this older kernel count as a custom kernel (all I did was change the number of the kernel version downloaded from 'ftp.kernel.org' and the patch version downloaded from 'ftp.archlinux.org', and the appropriate checksums)?

Re: lockup with startx

Sorry, in case it's not clear from my previous post, I used ABS to compile this older kernel
